JEDI OCEANS & BIOLOGY MOONSHOT PROGRAM
WHAT IS AT
STAKE?
The ocean microbiome is a largely untapped treasure trove of biological diversity and biochemical potential. Microorganisms account for nearly 90% of the ocean's biomass and play a critical role in marine ecosystem health. Despite groundbreaking discoveries of new organisms and genetic systems in recent years, much of the ocean microbiome remains uncharacterized or inaccessible.
WHAT IF we could leverage ocean microbiome discoveries to produce life-changing compounds at unprecedented speed?

GOAL
To harness the immense potential of the ocean microbiome to discover new drugs, fertilizers, antibiotics, and materials within 1-2 years
Develop new anticancer drugs inspired by ocean-derived compounds (over 60% of current anticancer drugs are biomimetic)

IMPACT
By focusing on bold, purpose-driven research, this program aims to:
Fight antimicrobial resistance using ocean-derived pathways
Advance sustainable agricultural practices with bio-based fertilizers
Create new materials and industrial compounds for high-value applications

CHALLENGE RESULTS
The program will follow an intense, competitive research methodology to:

Discover unique metabolic pathways in the ocean microbiome with potential for new drugs and materials

Identify promising anticancer compounds

Advance solutions for antimicrobial resistance using novel microbial systems

Develop sustainable biofertilizers

Enable the synthesis of new materials

Map new microbial species, unlocking untapped genetic and biochemical resources

Through rigorous science and technology, we aim to capitalize on recent discoveries and accessible data, foster interdisciplinary innovation to unlock untapped potential, lead the way in sustainable solutions for global health and industry.
For a healthier planet and transformative breakthroughs. WE NEED TO ACT NOW
